This later posting required special arrangements to be arranged. The latest time of posting from an Air Mail box at the London Head Office was usually from 1 ½ – 2 hours before the departure of the aeroplane from Croydon. Instead of pillar boxes, Charles Street and the Ludgate Circus Branch Office were each provided with a medium size wall box on pedestals. ![]() Other problems were experienced at some localities and alternative solutions were sought. The locations for the first 14 airmail boxes are shown below.Īirmail boxes in Charles Street and Parliament Street were the last to come into service in this group due to difficulties in obtaining permission from the authorities for them to be erected. The new boxes were startlingly attractive, particularly to a public possibly now blasé to the ordinary red British post box. of Falkirk was a contracted supplier of pillar-boxes to the Post Office and under their contract, fourteen standard ‘B’ type pillar-boxes were set aside for the new service. At first, the pillar boxes themselves were not specially designed or materially altered- ‘”the simplest type of single-apertured pillar box is proposed’“. These labels were affixed to letters to indicate that they were to be sent by airmail. The exact colour was based on blue airmail etiquettes. It also set them aside from the standard boxes for normal correspondence. A blue ‘AIR MAIL’ sign is attached to the cap but an enamel ‘Air Mail Only’ notice attached to smaller pillar boxes was omitted from beneath the aperture of this unique box.ĭespite a long association with the colour red for post boxes, it was blue that had become the colour associated with airmail and this was the colour felt most suitable for the new boxes. Airmail boxes at this location were designated ‘Air Box No. This was the only large ‘A’ type airmail box produced and replaced a smaller ‘B’ type airmail pillar outside Postal Headquarters, King Edward Building, EC1. Blue airmail pillar box, photographed soon after it’s installation in 1933. These would be dedicated to mail bearing the additional fees while the blue colour would also draw attention to the additional facility. It was proposed in 1929 that a small number of blue painted pillar boxes be placed in prominent positions in London. A problem being experienced in the Foreign Section of the British Post Office in the late 1920s was that Air Mail was being mixed with ordinary correspondence and was frequently being delayed as a result. This was in addition to the ordinary rate of postage that would have covered overland travel to Europe and beyond. The public had the facility for sending urgent letters by air to certain overseas countries on payment of a special airmail fee. The British Post Office had been pushing the potential for air transport of mail, and beyond the administrative nightmare of logistics and cost, had not been afraid to demonstrate a degree of innovation and flair during this time of change. The prim statement by senior postal official Lumley mostly disguises a quiet satisfaction. Lumley, Principal, Secretary’s Office, January 1936 “So far as the handling of air mails is concerned, the original scheme appears to have been modified in a manner well calculated to produce efficient and economical working, with due regard to the requirements of the future” D.O. On the left-hand side, when we do, we get □ over 81, nothing groundbreaking. ![]() And we’ll see why we do that in a moment. So we’re going to do something a little bit strange with this first equation. And now we have an equation in terms of □ to the power of □ minus one and then one that has □ to the power of □ and □. And on the right, we get 324 minus 324 times □ to the □th power. On the left-hand side, multiplying both one and negative □ by 484 gives us 484 minus 484□. Let’s distribute each pair of parentheses. So we have 484 times one minus □ equals 324 times one minus □ to the □th power. And that gets rid of the fraction for us. We’re going to multiply through by one minus □ here. So we say that 484 is equal to 324 times one minus □ to the □th power all over one minus □. In our other formula, we know that the sum of the first □ terms is 484. So we find that □ to the power of □ minus one is equal to one over 81. Our first formula, the one for the □th term, becomes four equals 324 times □ to the power of □ minus one. Let’s substitute everything we have into each of our formulae. And then, of course, we know the sum of all our terms to be equal to 484. So we can write □ sub □ to be equal to four. But we don’t actually know how many terms are in our sequence. Now we’re told the first term in our sequence is 324. And so we recall the sum of the first □ terms of the geometric sequence, with a first term □ sub one and a common ratio □, is □ sub one times one minus □ to the □th power over one minus □. Similarly, we’ve been given some information about the sum of the terms in the sequence. It’s the number we multiply each term by to get the next term. The □th term of a geometric sequence, □ sub □, is given by □ one times □ to the power of □ minus one, where □ sub one is the first term in the sequence and □ is the common ratio. So let’s recall what we do know about a geometric sequence. But we’re dealing with a geometric sequence. Find the geometric sequence, given the first term is 324, the last term is four, and the sum of all the terms is 484.Īt first glance, it might feel like we don’t have enough information to answer this question. ![]() ![]()

Laird’s 100 proof Apple Brandy (pictured above) is easily my top choice in an Applejack Old Fashioned. So some old cocktail books or articles that recommend grade B - such as mine perhaps - would refer to dark or very dark today.Īs I've made a point to mention before, I don’t usually like to recommend brands (though admittedly, I tend to point this out when I'm about to recommend a brand), but in this case, I can’t help it. This labeling led to the understandable misconception that grades B and C were lower quality, which precipitated the change. The old system had 3 subheadings of Grade A as well as a Grade B which was the darkest and strongest in flavor, and the bartender's choice for cocktails (there was also a grade C that wasn't commercially available and sold to factories for wholesale production of things like maple candy). Sap runs off lighter when tapping begins which is usually somewhere between late January-mid March depending on how cold it is, and gets progressively darker throughout the season, which typically taps out - sorry, couldn't help myself - after 4-6 weeks. The differences between the grades is a result of when the sap was tapped. It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup (!!!). The sap is collected and boiled down until to syrup consistency. Keep in mind these grades have nothing to do with quality, it’s just different flavor profiles. For cocktails, stronger is ideal but any will suffice. They are organized, quite literally, by color and taste:Īs you can see, the darker the syrup, the stronger its flavor. There are four grades of maple syrup which are subheadings of Grade A (a bit redundant I would say, but whatever). I don’t have anything against Aunt Jemima on pancakes, but there’s something off about them in it in cocktails that reminds me of cough syrup. It can be used straight out of the bottle, and it should be real maple syrup, as in from a tree. There’s no need to dilute maple syrup for cocktails - as you would with, say, honey. These are a mixture of 20-30% apple brandy with the rest being neutral grain spirits - not bad, but not my favorite. However, sometimes a spirit will be labeled as “Blended Applejack”, or “Applejack - a Blend”. You still see printed applejack on labels sometimes, just remember there’s no production-related difference from apple brandy. The term Applejack persists today presumably because it sounds cool (and very cool at that, that's the only reason I call it an Applejack Old Fashioned, as opposed to an Apple Brandy Old Fashioned). So hear that kids? Don’t try this at home. Aside from being prohibitively impractical on a large scale, it’s also quite dangerous because toxic higher alcohols like methanol aren’t removed as they can be with traditional distillation. No commercial apple brandy is made with this method today. The process can be repeated for further concentration, though it won't reach an ABV as high as a traditionally distilled spirit.Įventually, someone coined "jacked" cider, with the catchy name applejack. This ice can then be skimmed off leaving the remaining liquid at a higher proof. This is when a fermented beverage like hard cider, beer or wine is kept at freezing temperatures so the non-alcoholic elements solidify while the alcohol - which freezes at much lower temperatures - remains a liquid. But distillation requires a still, which not everyone had access to, so many who were in search of a stronger drink turned to a simpler method of concentrating the cider called jacking, aka freeze distillation. ![]() ![]() ![]() With no shortage of apples in the northeast, thirsty colonists made hard cider which could be then distilled into apple brandy. Restoring the environment from the lock file would only require to have that renv.lock in the project directory and then running renv::restore() (assuming that external dependencies such as e.g. For the end user it really comes down to just calling a few renv command. That means different projects can have different package versions on the same machine, without that you have to fiddle with manually setting and changing the package library path. Renv is also project-specific so you can have multiple projects on the same machine, all with their own local package library rather than having everything installed in the system library. Renv takes care of properly tracking all that. It also will not download and install packages from Github or other non CRAN/Bioc repositories (I guess). The problem with your solution is that it does not track down the dependencies so it can well be that results will not be reproducible even on the same machine if in a new installation dependencies get updated. ![]() Basically, the tool goes through all R scripts in that project and scans for require() and library() commands, then collects the packages and its dependencies. In a nutshell, you make a snapshot of your active RProject which creates a so called renv.lock file which is a JSON file with all package versions and its dependencies. It would be much easier to use a dedicated package for handling package versions. I hope this will help someone in the future and save their time. Let's activate the newly create conda environment.
